Project Overview
Description
Redefining urban scale at 386 Yonge Street, Aura Condos stands as a monumental engineering achievement in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Reaching an incredible height of 78 storeys and housing 995 residential units, this landmark skyscraper holds the distinction of being the country's tallest residential condominium tower. Designing a building of this unprecedented vertical scale required a complete departure from heavy, conventional exterior materials to avoid massive structural loads at extreme heights.
Challenge
- Clad the country’s tallest residential condominium tower, 78 storeys and 995 units, where heavy stone or precast concrete would impose massive structural loads at extreme heights
- Integrate the cladding directly with the curtain wall assembly
Solution
- A unitized, slab-to-slab wall assembly integrated directly into the curtain wall, supplied via OSI
- Preassembled panels attach between floor slabs rather than to a separate backup wall
- Eliminated the heavy, independent structural infrastructure typically demanded by precast concrete or thick masonry
- Accelerated the exterior construction schedule by 25% compared to traditional cladding
