Project Overview
Description
Serving as a prominent architectural gateway to the University of Toronto Mississauga campus, the Innovation Complex expands upon the former Kaneff Centre at 1833 Inner Cir Rd, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The facility features a sprawling central rotunda that functions as a high-traffic study and collaboration hub for students and faculty. The interior design pairs sweeping circular layouts with warm natural textures and towering lightwells to create an open, inspiring academic environment.
Challenge
- A high-traffic study and collaboration hub requiring durable, easily replaceable interior panels
- Incorporate a fluid, curved stone layout flowing around the rotunda’s circumference
- Deliver the natural stone character cost-effectively
Solution
- Lightweight stone veneers on an aluminum honeycomb backing, chosen to improve the durability of natural stone in a high-traffic area
- Preassembled curved panels flowing seamlessly around the rotunda
- Cost-effective delivery through the elimination of unnecessary interior structural framing
- A modular, easily replaceable panel setup that supports ongoing maintenance without disrupting university operations
